I live in Torpoint, near Plymouth on the Devon/Cornwall border. It is a million miles away from London Heathrow and Gatwick airports, or so it sometimes seems. Actually, it is about 250 miles by road and around 4.5hrs by train or often 7hrs+for me including travel to the station and waiting for connections. Until recently I have always driven. It is almost totally under my control, I can travel at times that suit me and it is flexible to changes in plan. It is also quite an expensive option as 500+ miles is about £60 plus parking at the airport is often approaching £100 for 2 weeks. So what are my options?

You may have noticed that on my Round the World trip I chose to use the train. This was, in part, because I departed from Gatwick and arrived back at Heathrow so it would have involved a transfer between the two. However, it turned out OK and it has made me reconsider the train as a good choice especially when travelling solo.

With the train a success I thought that I would investigate flying for this trip. FlyBe have started a new service this month from Newquay to Heathrow direct. It cost from about £80 each way so it isn’t too bad a price being comparable with using the car and parking and with Newquay about an hour away it means my wife could drop me off and pick me up so I thought I’d give it a try.

So I have booked NQY – LHR on 14th April to kick off the trip and again LHR – NQY on 22nd April to get me home. I don’t suppose this will be repeated when I am not on my own as it then gets quite expensive but for this trip it will make it a bit special.

I’ll let you know how I get on and whether it is a good choice.
