For a long time now I have had a more than passing interest in Ham Radio or Amateur Radio.  This kinda ties up with my life-long interest in flying and the use of the radio when flying has always given me enjoyment and the idea of being able to talk to people just using a radio is very attractive. Also, the hobby is technical and I love technical.

So recently I bought my first radio… a handheld with dual band (2m and 70cm)… Wouxun KG-UV9K. I’ll go into this radio in detail in a later post but as a first radio when starting out it looks ideal. Cheap too.

Now I have it sitting in my office I need to work out how to use it and that is not easy when you know nothing about radio. It isn’t like a CB radio where you turn it on, choose a channel and talk. It requires at least a basic understanding of radio just to hear anything.

I am studying for the Foundation Ham Radio licence which I plan to take in about 3 weeks so perhaps I’ll have a better idea then.

Quite exciting though.
